چکیده

Background The study was designed to verify the concept of plaques "at risk" and whether inflammation could play a role in plaque rupture and thrombosis. Methods and Results In 20 patients who had died of acute myocardial infarction, the thrombosed coronary artery was identified and the site of plaque rupture was traced in serial sections. The cellular characteristics of the fibrous cap at the immediate site of rupture were analyzed and compared with the adjacent cap tissue by use of monoclonal antibodies reactive with macrophages, T lymphocytes, and smooth muscle cells. A deep intimal rupture, extending into the lipid core, was encountered in 12 plaques, whereas 8 had superficial erosions only. Ten atherosclerotic plaques had a distinctly attenuated fibrous cap covering a large atheroma, 7 showed a thick fibrocellular cap overlying a lipid pool, and 3 showed a fibrocellular lesion without a clear lipid core. Macrophages, and to a lesser extent T lymphocytes, were the dominant cells at the immediate site of either rupture or superficial erosion in

An adenovirus type 3 host range variant with mutations in the E1a and E3 early gene regions.

A spontaneous variant of adenovirus (Ad) type 3 (subgroup B) was identified, which did not grow in HeLa cells, but grew in 293 cells with a large plaque morphology. The variant (Ad3var100) had a defect in the the early gene region E1a; it could grow in cells that supplied E1a functions and was complemented for growth in HeLa cells by Ad5 wild-type (subgroup C) but not by the E1a deletion mutant...

Assessment of coronary plaque morphology by contrast-enhanced computed tomographic angiography: comparison with intravascular ultrasound.

BACKGROUND Computed tomographic (CT) angiography provides accurate noninvasive assessment for coronary artery stenosis. The ability of CT angiography to determine plaque morphology remains unclear. METHODS Twelve patients undergoing intravascular ultrasound for clinical indications underwent CT angiography for the evaluation of plaque morphology. Plaque morphology was classified as (1) soft, ...

Quorum quenching for the management of dental plaque microbes

In the present study, variation among different bacterial strains was observed in the plaques of tobacco chewers (TC) as compared to those from normal persons (non tobacco chewers) (NTC). Bacterial strain J1 (dominant in the plaques of NTC) did not initiate the process of adhesion (biofilm formation) until it appeared to have reached a required population density necessary for the production of...

Magnetic resonance imaging of carotid atherosclerotic plaque in clinically suspected acute transient ischemic attack and acute ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND Carotid atherosclerotic plaque rupture is thought to cause transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke (IS). Pathological hallmarks of these plaques have been identified through observational studies. Although generally accepted, the relationship between cerebral thromboembolism and in situ atherosclerotic plaque morphology has never been directly observed noninvasively in th...

Histological correlates of carotid plaque surface morphology on lumen contrast imaging.

BACKGROUND Carotid angiographic plaque surface morphology is a powerful risk factor for stroke and systemic vascular risk. However, the underlying pathology is unclear, and a better understanding is required both to evaluate other forms of carotid imaging and to develop new treatments. Previous studies comparing angiographic plaque surface morphology with pathology have been small and unblinded...
